The virtual assistants promised a world of obedience where it was enough to snap your fingers to fulfill any will. But the reality was very different, since their compression failures made them dull tools. But with the injection of artificial intelligence (AI) everything changed and currently, Alexa from Amazon, Siri from Apple and Bixby from Samsung, together with Google Assistant, seek to expand their presence at home, through the so-called Internet of Things (IoT).
For the next two years, all refrigerators, stoves and ovens manufactured by LG and Samsung will leave the factory with an Internet connection. Trend that is validated with the latest report from the consultancy Futuresource Consulting, which estimates the sale of 56 million smart devices by 2019, compared to 25 million in 2018.
This new concept of voice control – be it from an application or a speaker – aims to create home ecosystems. Thus, the washing machine will be able to program itself according to the stains of the garments and as you will know if in the next few hours it will stop raining, it will indicate the best time to take out the tender. In addition, when the washing cycle is over, you will be notified via the TV screen or tablet that the clothes are ready.
“The AI-based digital assistants are already shaping a new era in digital interconnection and looking to become the gateway to control the Smart Home. Companies that offer greater ease to link their gadgets will conquer consumers. In Argentina, an important point to take into account is connectivity, since today speed is one of the slowest in the region, “warns Juan Morita, executive director of Accenture.
The systems that go to the head – as it was exposed in the last edition of the CES 2018 fair – are Alexa and Google Assistant. The first because it shows a greater presence in new appliances and the other, for its speed in solving complex queries and its ability to adapt to different configurations.
Weeks ago, through a publication of his official blog, Amazon stipulated that there are more than 50,000 Alexa skills worldwide. In addition, he reported that it is now compatible with 20,000 devices and is used by more than 3,500 brands. What they translate into more than 4,000 devices and 1,200 brands.
While Google Assistant boasts of having tripled in a few months (from 1,500 to 5,000) the number of devices it is able to control. And although you recognize English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, you can work with two languages simultaneously.
And if it’s about intelligence, some Samsung home appliances that incorporate the HomeCare Wizard technology are able to know if they are failing and while they do not perform an autoservice, they can diagnose the problem and help repair it. Thus, in the case of the washing machine filter you would show the steps to be followed to clean it thoroughly.
The two key pieces of the Samsung line are Bixby and SmartThings. “Bixby is the Personal Assistant of the Galaxy phones, through which we will be able to interact and manage by voice the home devices associated with the SmartThings platform. This assistant has the ability to learn as we use it, understanding our daily behavior and facilitating the day to day, “says Bruno Drobeta, Commercial Director of the Mobile division of Samsung Argentina.
While the SmartThings application has reserved the role of building the ecosystem. “It is the brain with which we can wirelessly connect a wide range of devices to work together. At the same time we can automate our home, manage all devices and also receive alerts, “says Diego Puhl, director of home line of the same company.
